Funding Statements

Version 1.0 · Effective from 14 August 2026

Authors are required to declare, within the manuscript submission system, any grant or funding that was used wholly or partly for the study, the preparation of the manuscript, equipment, analysis, or the payment of article processing charges. This policy sets out what must be declared, what falls outside that requirement, how the declaration is made and agreed, and the form a Funding Statement should take.

1. Scope

This policy applies to every manuscript submitted to a JQBio-published title, and to all listed authors. It governs the declaration of grants, awards, and other funding connected with the study, the preparation of the manuscript, equipment used in the work, analysis, or the payment of article processing charges (APCs), and the funding statement that results from that declaration and appears with the version of record.

2. Funding that must be declared

Authors must declare any grant or funding that directly contributed to the work being submitted, or that falls within the scope of the grant concerned, including funding used wholly or partly for the study itself, the preparation of the manuscript, equipment, analysis, or payment of APCs. The declaration is made within the manuscript submission system and, for accepted manuscripts, surfaces with the version of record, so that funders whose support contributed to the work are acknowledged transparently to readers.

3. Funding that should not be declared

A grant or funder that did not directly contribute to the work through one of the mechanisms described in Section 2, or whose financial assistance has little to no bearing on the scope of the manuscript being submitted, should not be included in the funding statement. This applies regardless of whether the grant or funder supports an author in other ways, where that support has no distinct connection to the production or presentation of the manuscript concerned.

4. Declaration and author agreement

The funding statement is submitted within the manuscript submission system against the submission record. All listed authors must agree to the funding statement before publication is accepted; a submission is not progressed to acceptance while the funding statement remains outstanding or unagreed by any listed author.

5. Form of the statement

A funding statement should be concise, and should describe, where applicable, the specific contribution made by each funder to the work. Departures from the templated forms below are accepted, provided the statement remains short and, where applicable, identifies how each funder supported the work.

Accepted short forms include, for example:

  • “Authors thank the support from [Funder name; grant number; date].”
  • “Supported by [Funder name; grant number; date]; data analysis.”
  • “Authors acknowledge the support from [Funder name; grant number; date].”
  • “Authors declare no relevant funding.”
  • “The work presented in this article was self-funded by Authors.”

Where a study draws on several grants, or where different authors are supported by different funders for distinct elements of the work, the statement may be longer and should attribute each source of support to the relevant element of the work or the relevant author. For example:

A.B. et al., “Publication name”

“This study was supported by the ABC via the CD Program 2020 (project nos. xxxx and xxxx) and FG Program 2021 (project no. xxxx), the Research Center xxxx (project no. xxxx) and the Ministry for Science via the Project M (no. xxxx) and Study grant (no. xxxx). A.B. is supported by a European Research Council grant (no xxxx) and the University of Example A (project no. xxxx). D.E. is supported by the xxxx Accelerator award program (project no. xxxx, coordinated by A.B.). T.E., B.W-N. and A.S. are supported by the PhD program and T.A. by the Molecular Biology MSc program of the University of Example B.”
